Le 22 mai 2005, pour la première fois dans l’histoire du Soudan du Sud, le drapeau de la région autonome est officiellement hissé aux Nations Unies à New York, lors d’une cérémonie marquant un moment fort de reconnaissance symbolique de l’autonomie sud-soudanaise.
Un symbole d’espoir après la guerre
Ce geste fort intervient quelques mois après la signature de l’Accord de paix global (CPA) du 9 janvier 2005, entre le gouvernement soudanais et le SPLM/A (Mouvement/Armée populaire de libération du Soudan), mettant fin à 21 années de guerre civile, l’un des conflits les plus meurtriers du continent africain, avec près de 2 millions de morts et des millions de déplacés.
Le CPA accordait une autonomie large au Sud-Soudan, ainsi qu’un partage des ressources pétrolières, une participation au gouvernement central, et surtout l’organisation d’un référendum d’autodétermination prévu pour 2011.
La cérémonie du 22 mai : un moment fondateur
Le 22 mai 2005, la levée du drapeau du Sud-Soudan, aux côtés de celui du Soudan et des autres États membres de l’ONU, symbolisait l’entrée du Sud-Soudan sur la scène internationale, non encore comme un État indépendant, mais comme une entité politique reconnue et dotée d’une voix.
Cette cérémonie fut couverte par les médias internationaux et saluée par la communauté diplomatique comme un signe fort de la volonté de paix et de reconstruction.
