Plus de 1100 réfugiés rwandais ont regagnés leur pays d’origine le samedi 17 et lundi 19 mai 2025. Cette opération de rapatriement, organisée par le Haut-Commissariat des Nations unies pour les réfugiés (HCR), s’étendra prochainement à plusieurs zones de la province du Nord-Kivu. L’objectif est de permettre à tous les citoyens rwandais souhaitant retourner au Rwanda d’exercer ce droit, a déclaré Eijun Byun, porte-parole du HCR, lors d’une interview accordée à Radio Okapi depuis Genève, le lundi 19 mai 2025.
Selon les chiffres communiqués par le porte-parole du HCR, 360 réfugiés sont arrivés au Rwanda la semaine dernière, tandis que 795 autres ont été rapatriés en date du 19 mai. Eijun Byun a assuré que toutes les dispositions prévues par le droit international relatives au rapatriement des réfugiés sont scrupuleusement respectées par l’équipe du HCR basée à Goma.
Certains réfugiés rencontrés par la rédaction de Fact OGL à la Grande Barrière, poste-frontière entre la République démocratique du Congo et le Rwanda, ont exprimé leur joie de pouvoir enfin rentrer chez eux après plusieurs années passées en exil.

Le HCR précise que les profils des personnes rapatriées, notamment des femmes, des enfants et des personnes en situation de handicap, ont été minutieusement vérifiés à Goma afin de s’assurer qu’il s’agit bien de réfugiés rwandais.
