Le 15 mai 2015, le Burundi a connu un moment décisif de son histoire politique avec l’échec d’un coup d’État militaire dirigé par le général Godefroid Niyombaré. Le 13 mai, alors que Nkurunziza se trouve en Tanzanie, le général Niyombaré annonce la destitution du président et la mise en place d’un gouvernement de transition.
Déroulement du coup d’État
Les jours suivants sont marqués par de violents affrontements entre forces loyalistes et putschistes, notamment autour du siège de la Radio-Télévision Nationale du Burundi (RTNB). Le 15 mai au matin, le général annonce l’échec du coup d’État. Il prend la fuite tandis que plusieurs de ses collaborateurs sont arrêtés.
Conséquences immédiates
Le président Nkurunziza rentre à Bujumbura et reprend le contrôle du pays. Il félicite les forces armées et renforce la répression contre les opposants. Malgré cela, les manifestations contre le troisième mandat se poursuivent.
Réactions internationales
La communauté internationale, y compris l’Union africaine, les Nations Unies, les États-Unis et l’Union européenne, condamne à la fois la tentative de putsch et la décision de briguer un troisième mandat. Tous appellent au respect de l’Accord d’Arusha et de la Constitution burundaise.
